The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) and the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) in Sri Lanka are holding two public meetings titled “Oppose US-Israel war on Iran.”
The first is an online event via Zoom on Sunday July 6 at 7 p.m.; the second is an in-person public meeting on Tuesday July 8 at 3 p.m. at Veerasingham Hall in Jaffna.
We urge all workers, youth, students and concerned individuals to attend these events and join the struggle against imperialist war.
The SEP/IYSSE meetings, which are immensely important for the entire working class, are being held in the wake of the unprovoked US military attack on Iran. This assault, which included the use of the most powerful non-nuclear bunker-buster bombs against Iranian nuclear energy facilities, followed several days of Israeli-led attacks.
Washington’s act of aggression, which is part of Israel’s escalating genocide in Gaza, threatens to engulf the entire Middle East, potentially setting the world on fire.
Trump’s Monday night announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran offers no guarantee of a genuine end to hostilities. Both Washington and Tel Aviv have repeatedly used White House promises of negotiations as a smokescreen for escalating aggression.
More fundamentally, Trump’s direct assault on Iran and the relentless US drive for regime change in Tehran are tied to the broader objective of consolidating American imperialist domination over this geopolitically vital region, in preparation for a much broader conflict with Russia and China.
Significant opposition to the imperialist war on Iran is growing among workers and young people and the oppressed masses internationally, including in the US.
President Dissanayake’s Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna/National People’s Power (JVP/NPP) government in Sri Lanka has responded to the war against Iran with hypocrisy and double-talk.
Anxious not to alienate the Trump administration but acutely aware of the mass opposition of Sri Lankan workers and youth to US imperialism, the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry issued an empty statement after Washington’s bombing. It timidly called for “all parties to take concrete steps to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East region.”
The main concern of the Sri Lankan ruling elite is that war in the Middle East could lead to the sort of economic instability seen during Sri Lanka’s economic collapse in 2022, which ignited a mass anti-government uprising involving millions of workers.
The SEP in Sri Lanka, along with its sister parties of the International Committee of the Fourth International, is calling for mass opposition to the intensification of imperialist war.
A pamphlet by Keith Jones
The essential task today is the political arming of the international working class with a revolutionary socialist program to put an end to imperialist war and the capitalist system that breeds it. Our meetings will discuss how the imperialist powers, led by the US, are driving humanity to a catastrophic global conflagration and the program workers and youth need to prevent it.
Join us on July 6 and 8 to discuss these important political issues.
